Poke The Box Cover

This was my first attempt at a book of this kind. I must admit that while it was inspiring, there were no earth shattering revelations and one could probably summarize the content of book in a couple of pages. The tone of the book also reminds me of being in an audience with one of those ‘yes..yes..yes’ motivational speakers on stage. I am also having difficulty in understanding the hype and I don’t see why I would need a Poke The Box Handbook to help me implement the lessons in the book.

In all fairness, however, it did succeed in helping me to remember things that have started to fade from memory. Things that are critical to the survival of businesses in the ever changing environments that we find ourselves in. New competitors spring up all around us and technology is advancing at such a tremendous rate. How do we keep our competitive advantage?

Tencent launches a $759 million fund for online games. The fund is aimed at acquiring new sources of revenue growth in the online gaming market. Tencent, the sole investor in the fund, wishes to reinforce its position as a major Chinese virtual services provider. http://bit.ly/h4yCfW

Nokia partners with Tencent and SINA. The partnership is aimed at using Tencent and SINA’s vast online community to bring location-based services (check-ins and recommendations) to Nokia’s Ovi maps. The partnership forms a strategic base for Nokia to create partnerships with established brands to extend services which has already taken off in the US. http://bit.ly/dHUyYD

I must confess that Jono Bacon actually caught me by surprise. While I was following the creation process of the book (O’Reilly invited UG leaders to send feedback) I could have never imagined I would one day have something so useful for someone who deals with communities on a day to day basis. In this universe Jono is a well known figure, with vast experience in managing and participating in online communities, which credits him as a perfect candidate to write a book like this one.

This review has been pending for a while, but recently I finished reading Derick Rethans’ book: Date and Time Programming. At first glance the topic of the book might lead you to think “why do I need a book to teach me about such a simple topic” ? But further investigation and hard experience will show you that handling date and time in software development is not always as straightforward as “Its twelve o’clock”.

Even though it was published in 2005, the issues that “Essential PHP Security” addresses is still very relevant today. Written by Chris Shiflett, the book goes through various security aspects associated with a PHP application, and for that reason its content can be considered up to date and applicable to various day-to- day situations faced by developers.
